José Madureira Lopes é autor de diversos livros dedicados à história e ao património de Setúbal. Em 2015 publicou, em coautoria com Alberto Sousa Pereira, a obra A Indústria das Conservas de Peixe em Setúbal, afirmando-se como um dos principais investigadores da história económica, social e cultural da cidade.
É também autor ou coautor de várias publicações, entre as quais Américo Ribeiro Todos os Dias; Setúbal d’Outros Tempos; Setúbal à la Minute através do Bilhete Postal Ilustrado; Vitória: do Nascimento à Glória; e Anais de Setúbal do Século XX – Uma Cronologia Ilustrada.
Filho de Setúbal, nasceu no bairro das Fontainhas, numa família ligada ao mar: o pai era pescador e a mãe doméstica. Cresceu em tempos difíceis, com uma infância simples, passada a brincar nas ruas da cidade. Testemunha das profundas transformações de Setúbal ao longo da segunda metade do século XX, dedicou grande parte da sua vida a investigar, documentar e preservar a memória coletiva da cidade, valorizando o seu património material e imaterial através de um vasto conjunto de publicações.
José Madureira Lopes is the author of several books devoted to the history and heritage of Setúbal. In 2015, together with Alberto Sousa Pereira, he published The Fish Canning Industry in Setúbal, establishing himself as one of the leading researchers on the city’s economic, social and cultural history.
He is also the author or co-author of several other publications, including Américo Ribeiro Every Day; Setúbal of Other Times; Setúbal à la Minute through the Illustrated Postcard; Vitória: From Birth to Glory; and Annals of Setúbal in the Twentieth Century – An Illustrated Chronology.
A native of Setúbal, he was born in the Fontainhas neighbourhood into a family closely connected to the sea: his father was a fisherman and his mother a homemaker. He grew up in difficult times, enjoying a simple childhood spent playing in the streets of the city. Having witnessed the profound transformations of Setúbal throughout the second half of the twentieth century, he has devoted much of his life to researching, documenting and preserving the city’s collective memory, promoting its tangible and intangible heritage through an extensive body of published work.
