António dos Santos
António dos Santos foi aluno do Orfanato Municipal Presidente Sidónio Pais, em Setúbal, onde aprendeu a profissão de tipógrafo. A ligação ao mundo das artes gráficas marcou toda a sua vida profissional, tendo sido sócio fundador da Gráfica Corlito, empresa onde trabalhou durante trinta e cinco anos e que contou entre os seus clientes numerosas empresas da indústria conserveira portuguesa.
É o grande impulsionador do espaço expositivo instalado no antigo Orfanato Presidente Sidónio Pais, um verdadeiro tesouro escondido na cidade de Setúbal. Ali preserva-se a memória da instituição e de muitos dos seus antigos alunos, num lugar que continua vivo graças às tertúlias, encontros e histórias partilhadas entre amigos.
Autor de vários livros dedicados à história e às memórias do Orfanato, tem desempenhado um papel fundamental na preservação de um importante património humano e social de Setúbal. Entre as suas obras destacam-se O Achamento de meu Pai… e Outras Histórias Vividas no Orfanato Municipal de Setúbal (2004), A Cidade dos Rapazes Pobres – Setúbal – Anos de 1950 (2006), Para lá dos Portões do Asilo (2009), Romagem de Saudade dos Rapazes do Orfanato pelo 18 de Maio (2011) e O Fantasma do Convento da Soledade (2017).
Foi através da sua paixão pela tipografia e pela história local que os nossos caminhos se cruzaram, unidos pela vontade comum de preservar a memória gráfica e industrial de Setúbal.
António dos Santos was a pupil at the President Sidónio Pais Municipal Orphanage in Setúbal, where he learned the craft of typography. His passion for the graphic arts shaped his entire professional life. He became a founding partner of Gráfica Corlito, where he worked for thirty-five years, producing printed materials for many companies in the Portuguese fish canning industry.
He is the driving force behind the exhibition space housed in the former President Sidónio Pais Orphanage, a true hidden treasure in the city of Setúbal. There, the memory of the institution and its former pupils is carefully preserved in a place that remains alive through gatherings, conversations, and shared memories.
The author of several books devoted to the history and memories of the orphanage, António has played a vital role in preserving an important part of Setúbal’s social and human heritage. His publications include The Discovery of My Father… and Other Stories from the Setúbal Municipal Orphanage (2004), The City of Poor Boys – Setúbal in the 1950s(2006), Beyond the Orphanage Gates (2009), Pilgrimage of Remembrance – The Orphanage Boys and 18 May (2011), and The Ghost of the Convent of Soledade (2017).
Our paths crossed through a shared passion for typography and local history, united by the desire to preserve Setúbal’s graphic and industrial heritage.
